A Vintage Journey - Guest Creative Guide - The Evil Queen's Vanity

Hello Everyone!

I am so excited to be here today and thrilled to tell you that I am the Guest Creative Guide at A Vintage Journey for their current challenge THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, hosted by the lovely and talented Julia.

I knew the minute I heard the theme, that I wanted to do something related to mirror in Snow White, so I pulled out some pizza boxes, lots of Tim Holtz products and came up with this. I hope you enjoy my gothic version of THE EVIL QUEEN'S VANITY!

The four corner adornment pieces were molded with crafter's clay and antiqued with Tim Holtz paints Black Soot and Tarnished Brass. The gemstones were tinted with alcohol inks. The charm is from Tim Holtz Idea-Ology and I stamped the sentiment with an alphabet stamp then covered it with UTEE and cracked it.

For the bottles I used the Tim Holtz faux cracked glass technique and alcohol inks to colour it. The feather is from the Sizzix Feather Duo die set. The scroll was crumpled up, stamped with Ranger Coffee Archival ink and the script stamp from the Urban Grunge stamp set. I rolled it around some toothpicks and glued spacer beads to the ends.

My Gothic Evil Queen vanity started off as a pizza box, like many of my projects do. For the inside of the vanity, I painted the cardboard with a combination of Tim Holtz paints Fired Brick, Pumice Stone and Aged Mahogany. I used the Gothic stencil and some texture paste to apply the pattern and covered the paste with Ranger clear embossing powder while it was still wet.

After the paste dried, I heated up the embossing powder and used it as a resist so I could attack my panel with sprays and keep the texture paste white. I used Tim Holtz Fired Brick, Pumice Stone, Walnut Stain and Tarnished Brass until I got the look that I liked.

The pillars were made with little boxes folded from the pizza box and some Kraft paper wrapped around my Swiffer handle!! Some crafter's clay moldings and waxed cord for texture. The flowers were also made from Kraft paper, coloured with Fired Brick distress spray and cut with the Tattered Florals die.

The leaves were cut from Tim Holtz's Garden Greens die and coloured using Peeled Paint and Forest Moss distress ink sprays. The pillars were highlighted with Tarnished Brash around the molded areas.

The mirror frame was cut from Tim Holt'z Ornate frame die and I used the distress glitter technique with Tarnished Brass glitter and Black Soot distress ink to give it that aged metal look. The letters are made from coated metallic paper, covered with UTEE and cracked when cooled. A little Walnut Stain was dropped between the layers and allowed to pool. This is the same technique that I used for the glass in the mirror.

I am entering my Evil Queen's Vanity into the following wonderful challenges:

That's it for today. Thank you for stopping in and for all the amazing comments. I read and appreciate every single one! If you have any questions, please let me know.

  12. Speechless Pamellia... all I can think is to write you a story of what came to my mind as I looked at your "fairest of them all" vanity. ONCE UPON A TIME... there was Royal Vintage Journey Guest Creative Guide that created a VANITY for The Evil Queen. Now if you listen to the tale bearers throughout the Vintage Journey Kingdom... it is said that Princess Pamellia from the Little Province of Craft Things.... has the kindest heart in the realm. She loves to spread good will and keep the kingdom a safe and happy place for creativity to abound. It is also said that she could turn a pigs ear into a silk purse with her magical hands. And it was true! THUS... Princess Pamellia created an intriguing and awe inspiring VANITY for the EVIL QUEEN who constantly spread spells throughout the kingdom to decrease creative mojo. It had to stop. Princess Pamellia mixed powders, pastes and dies in her cauldron adding sprinkles of glitter, utee and metallics. Her spell came to life. The VANITY shimmered and shone across the Kingdom for miles and miles. The Evil Queen was drawn to the sheer beauty of the shimmering light fearing that whatever it was... might possibly outshine her loveliness. After all - she knew she was the fairest of them all. It didn't take long for the Evil Queen to find the source of the mysterious glow. She could not take her eyes from the amazing Vanity with the most beautiful metallic mirror she had ever seen. Slowly she approached the Vanity - touched it - admired it - smelled the flowers and then.... the Evil Queen dared to hold the fabulous Mirror in her hands. She slowly lifted it to her face - believing it would confirm her status of fair beauty. The earth trembled as the mirror reflected what was in it's presence with great intensity. The Evil Queen looked into the mirror expecting to see her beauty but her vanity consumed her and she was taken into the deep recessed of the mirrors realm - trapped into the looking glass - to be seen no more. For you see.... the mirror reflects virtue and goodness but like darkness it absorbs the undesirable mojo so that only creativity will remains. Throughout the Kingdom, banners flew, trumpet blared, and feasts of creative yumminess began in honor of the victory the Princess Pamellia had over the Evil Queen. For today - in the land of Vintage Journey - Princess Pamellia is the FAIREST Creative Guide of the ALL!!!!!!!!!! j

  35. OMGoodness, I am not sure where to even start with this masterpiece. I would like to spend some time in the creative part of your brain sometime just to see what I could soak up. I love all the molded bits and pieces (bringing my clay next time) and the text is incredible (on my list for next time - looks like there won't be much chatting). I can picture the castle with all the texture, the added elements and the colour palette. This is brilliant. BTW since I don't have nearly your creative mind, my Swiffer has no fear of being moved to my craft room and can continue to be at the ready for its intended purpose of murdering dust bunnies.
    Hugs!

  73. Wow, Wow, And W O W again! I've been back to lust and drool over this Evil Queen's Vanity over and over, and promised I would be back to comment when I had a clear head. Well, from a sleep standpoint it should be clear, but every time I look at this I get dizzy from giddiness! This is just one of those pieces of yours that leaves me speechless! I just love all the ways you've gone about making this, from those magical UTEE mirrored pieces, to the texture on your Swiffer handle pillars! I will never look at my Swiffer the same way again!

At closer inspection I am relieved to see that the Swiffer handle was used but not included in the final project! I was worried about the state of your fur balls! I also see you did not use Kraft Core (as I did, when I was wrinkling while you were posting), but made your own--of course! Talk about GENIUS!

I could go on and on about everything I love about this, but have to get to work. May I ask one technical question? What did you texture the shaft of the pillars with? It's got me so stinkin' curious! You are a creative genius, and I'm so happy you share what's in your mind with us! You're a real sweetie, too! Huge hugs, my friend!

  89. It's amazing what you can do with a pizza box. I'm now putting all the cereal and biscuit boxes on side, hoping that one day I will be able to make something useful out of them. And don't even get me started on those Pringles cans. I have plenty of those, but still haven't had the courage to do some mixed media with them. But I will. Soon! Right now I have another project that I need to finish asap (but last day is 29 May).
Anyways ... I wanted to tell you that I really admire your out of the box thinking and crafting skills. This is utterly amazing!
