It's time for another challenge at Divas by Design! This week the challenge is SPOOKY CREATIONS! I would love to see everyone share their spooky, creepy Halloween projects with us! I know you want to! lol
Here is my creation.
I have never made a Halloween card of any kind before, so I was really scratching my head when I first read the theme. But then I saw something that sparked my interest and creativity...it was a beautiful card by Nancy Dynes over at Frilly and Funkie. Their current challenge is A Haunting Halloween and I pulled my inspiration from Nancy's spectacular, elegant black and ivory shabby chic card. If you haven't been to visit Nancy at Tattered Treasures, I highly recommend you do, she will blow you away with her shabby chic elegance!
Thank you Nancy for being such an inspiration!
For the background I used a Prima Marketing Damask stencil and some home-made texture paste using DecoArt Ebony paint to make a coloured paste (texture paste tutorial...click here). While the paste was still wet, I sprinkled on some Ranger embossing puffs and then heated it up to give the background a creepy, dusty feel and texture.
The flowers are cut from Joy Crafts Flower 4 out of Kraft card stock and edged with Tim Holtz distress ink Black Soot. A touch of Ranger embossing puffs here too.
The leaves are cut from Spellbinders Foliage and Cheery Lynn Leaf Set.
I had to pull a MacGyver to make my image, as I didn't have anything that fit the size I wanted. I took the chandelier stamp from the BoBunny Welcome Home stamp set and put tape over the outer candles (there is actually 3 candles on either side of the base). Then I applied the ink to the stamp and pulled of the tape. The cobweb and spider came from an Inkadinkado stamp set. I drew the line down to the spider with a black fine tip marker! VoilĂ , spooky scene!
The middle layer was stamped using Graphic 45 - Harlequin stamp and Tim Holtz distress ink Black Soot. The sentiment is from Heartfelt Creations - All Seasons and also stamped with Black Soot distress ink.
I edged all of the panels with a bit of Tim Holtz distress ink Gathered Twigs and Vintage Photo and threw in a little more embossing puffs around the edges and corners.
Honestly, I never thought in a million years I would make a card with a spider on it! Brrrr, creepy! My spider came from the dollar store. It was just plain black plastic until I got my hands on him, now he's a stylish, shabby chic spider!
I am entering my card into the following wonderful challenges:

DeleteNot too sure how you have managed to make this both elegant and creepy at the same time, Pamellia but you have! Those papers are wonderful and I love how the whole design appears to be covered in spider’s web!! That spider looks a bit too real for my liking though!! :) xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jane! I agree about the spider! The background is actually texture paste. It's 3d and kind of creepy too! big hugs :)
DeleteHi Pamellia, I went over to Nancy's Tattered Treasures and I can see you got your inspiration from her card. But still you have to make it yourself and you have done a more than wonderful job. It's a stunning creation you have here. And although it looks very refined it also looks very creepy ;-) Love it.

DeleteI can't tell you how much I love this. I am so into Halloween right now. Not my usual holiday favorite, but this year I'm loving it. Fantastic shabby chic card. I love the black and cream palette as well. I sooooo had to laugh at your MacGyver stamping ... I think we all have to pull that off at some time or another. Absolutely adore your texture paste additions and that dollarstore spider is fabulous. The little details like the the fibers on the flowers are what make this such a spectacular card. Love it. -- Mary Elizabeth

ReplyDeleteAahhh, thank you Chris! How wonderful of you to say! :)
DeleteAbsolutely stunning and spooky at the same time - you do shabby sooooo well and you know I am in awe. Love the damask background and the spider with his web on the chandelier. Funny when the sun was shining into my dining room the other day I noticed cobwebs on my hanging light - good thing they weren't there the last time we had a dinner party or I would have been mortified. The little beggars are looking for warmth this time of year. Thanks for sharing your wonderful card with us at Frilly and Funkie.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Cec
Aahhh, thanks Cec! I am so paranoid about the chandelier, I look at it every time I walk by...just in case! big hugs :)
DeleteI LOVE your card, Pamellia!! You may have been inspired by mine but you made it your own and it is AMAZING!! It has a wonderful spooky elegance, and your spider is so realistic I feel like he could crawl right off the card! Your work with the texture paste is perfection and adds so much to the design. The chandelier is the perfect element to compliment the brocade and cobwebs. Way to rock your very first Halloween card!!
ReplyDeleteI have to warn you of something that's happened since I made my spider card-lol! First of all, I HATE spiders. After making my card I noticed strands of real cobwebs hanging from the chandelier over my craft desk. I don't think they were there before because I have an excellent housekeeper and she would have noticed them. THEN about two days later a HUGE banana spider made a massive web across my front porch and now I'm afraid to go out there to water the flowers in my window boxes. I want my husband to capture it and put it in the landscaped area in the center of the cul de sac, but every time he tries to get it the creepy thing drops to the ground and hides. I now use the side door to enter and exit our home. I don't think I'll be making another spider card any time soon. Let me know if you begin noticing any close encounters of a spidery nature:-))
Thanks so much for joining us at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge. I am one of your biggest fans!
Hugs,
Nancy
Wow Nancy, what a wonderful compliment, you are such a sweetheart! Isn't that weird about the spiders!! It's sort of like when you hear a word that you have never heard before, then all of a sudden you start hearing it everywhere! The universe does like to play with us! big crafty hugs :)
