Our Creative Corner - I'm on the Design Team!!

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas full of yummy food, good friends and lots of family hugs! I apologize for not being able to leave a message on everyone's blog before I left, but time just got away from me! I thank everyone for all the kind Christmas wishes you left me, you filled my heart with holiday joy! I had such a wonderful time with my family, but I have to admit, I sure did miss my craft room! OK, let's get to it, shall we!

I have just been squirming to tell you the great news! Laura Bomber, the owner of Our Creative Corner has invited me to be a part of their Design Team. Only a crazy person would say no to that, so starting January 1st, I will officially be a member of the Our Creative Corner family as we begin our first challenge of 2015! I'm still pinching myself! I would like to send out a huge Thank You to Laura and the rest of the team for welcoming me with such warm smiles and big hearts! I can't wait for this next leg of my crafty adventure to begin!

Laura asked me to put together a little something to introduce me to the crafting community, so for my first project, I have made this altered box. I call it my OCC TRINKET BOX! I do hope you like it!!

The name plate was hand made using crafter's clay and a silicone mold. I painted it with home-made bronze paint (DecoArt Forest Green, Black and Spun Gold paints mixed together). I antiqued it with Tim Holtz Black Soot distress stain and used Rock Candy crackle paint to cover the OCC that I stamped with an alphabet set.

The large red rose and the small carnation were made using Tim Holtz Tattered Florals, the medium and small red roses were made using Joy Crafts Flower 2. All of the red flowers were spritzed with a bit of Gathered Twigs and Tarnished Brass distress sprays. The white flowers are from Wild Orchid Crafts and the leaves were cut with a La-La Lands die.

The large dragonfly was a plastic cut out. I sanded it and applied some home-made glitter paste in gold, then I squished in some gemstones and let it set. I spritzed it with Gathered Twigs and Tarnished Brass distress sprays. I rubbed some embossing gel over the raised bits and then added some Ranger Queens Gold embossing powder and heated it up. The small dragonfly was cut out using an Elizabeth Craft Designs die and textured using the same process.

I wrapped the body of the dragonfly with gold wire and used the ends to make the antennae. I got this idea from a very super talented lady SARA EMILY BARKER of sarascloset. I get a lot of inspiration from her fabulous works and I highly recommend you visit her blog if you haven't already...you won't be disappointed!

HOW DID I DO THAT?

- I started with a plain unfinished wooden box and removed the hinges and the latch. I used Mod Podge Matte to stick a layer of cheesecloth to the entire outside of the box and lid.

Here is where things went terribly awry! I forgot to put the base coat on before I applied the paste!! This was an epic error that took me three days and a full box of Q-tips to fix! I'm not going to explain to you what I DID, I'm going to explain to you what I SHOULD have done!

- I should have applied a thick layer of white Gesso and THEN used my ColorBox Mandala stencil with some of my home-made glitter paste in gold to cover the box with this amazing pattern. Let's just pretend I did that and move on, shall we. lol

- I then began spraying with Tim Holtz's new distress sprays in Iced Spruce, Bundled Sage (my new favourite colour combination) and Tarnished Brass as well as some Lindy's Stamp Gang Moonshadow Mist Tawny Turquoise.

- I applied some globs (that's the actual technical term for it) of Mod Podge and then dropped some different seed beads and micro-beads into the globs and let them dry. A few final sprays of ink, let it dry and presto, ready to decorate!

A couple of close ups of the finished texture. To view super-sized images, right click on any image and then click 'open link in new tab'.

I hope you liked my introductory project, make sure to come back on January first for our first challenge of 2015!
I will be proudly displaying this badge!

I am entering my Trinket Box into the following wonderful challenges:

My absolute favourite thing from 2014 was the discovery of mixed media, especially texture paste!

(I chose Bow, Stencil, Dies - I used quite a few bows, but most ended up covered by flowers)

That's it for today. Thank you for stopping in and for all the amazing comments. I read and appreciate every single one! If you have any questions, please let me know.

  1. WOW, HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Pamellia you deserve this so much as your style is so in synch with theirs and your first project is as always stunning. Glad you managed to sort out your little issue to start with sounds painful for you to get it back to a base you could use but the result is startlingly beautiful.

Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful vintage creations in 2015 and beyond.

  4. Woohoo, big congrats on your new DT position. They are SO lucky to have you!!!
When I saw what you made with that plain wooden box I was about to get dressed and run to the craft store to get myself one too - just to make myself something similar. Then I remembered that it's Sunday and that craft store is closed today. Probably better, because there's a lot of snow outside so a trip anywhere isn't a very good idea, especially not with a car. I think I can say without hesitation that this is one of the most gorgeous trinket boxes EVER! I love how those flowers pop out and those dragonflies and butterfly are soooo beautiful too!!! You know how much I like those winged critters. ;) Wow, just wow!
    Hugs! xx

    2. You would go even crazier if you saw how limited their selection of craft thingies is. *sigh* When I was in a craft store in England my eyes were huuuge - I've never seen so many craft things at one place. I was like a kid (that has never had any candy) in a candy store. Craft heaven! ;)

Have a wonderful New Year. May the year 2015 be filled with joy, laughter and happiness.

      Big hugs to you!!! xx

    3. It's not much better around here either. I order most of my craft supplies on line because the few things that are available here are so outrageously expensive, you wouldn't even believe it!! But gift cards make the price seem a littler better, yeah??! HA! hugs :)

  24. Hi there Pamellia - got to tell you that ever since I saw your box you know where I have been dying to know how you created all that mindblowing texture and interest on such a fantastic piece. I cant wait to go and see how you made the glitter paste - and the globbed microballs are so whimsically eyecatching - by God it must have taken you ages to make this. I bet you would never ever want to give this away! I cant believe that I get to hang out and rub shoulders with the likes of you talented people on this team. It feels surreal that I get to be grouped with people of such brilliant, creative, genius. So looking forward to getting to know you better as well. 57. Sigh! drooooooool! Sigh! Ahhhhhhhhhh! this is so very beautiful, the detail in your "makes" are always astonishing. You really must enjoy your playtime. I wonder if you would do a one to one tutorial? just one little thing - you would have to pay your own airfare. Still what's a few hundred/thousand dollars between friends ay? LOL.

Congratulations on your well deserved DT post, they are so lucky to have you.

    Happy New Year Pamellia
