Frilly and Funkie - Hip to be Square

Hello Everyone,

It's time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie. The lovely and talented Cec is our hostess and she has chosen the theme "HIP TO BE SQUARE". She would like you to go retro and make a project influenced by the brighter colours and/or images and patterns of the hippie era of the late 1960's/early 1970's. Your project must either be square or include at least one square element. One lucky winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Linda's shop The Funkie Junkie Boutique!

I decided to go with the bright colours of the 60's and 70's since there's just not a thing I enjoy about those crazy patterns that were popular back then! Psychedelic does not look good on me, but the colours on the other hand...vibrant and beautiful!! My 'Bold Angel' had a field day with this one!! lol

The background was done with Ken Oliver Colour Bursts, the ribbon was coloured with Distress in pads and the handmade flowers were coloured with Distress ink sprays. The frames are from Spellbinders, the leaves and lattice dies are from Sizzix. The papers are from Maja Design, the twine is from May Arts.

All of the following products that I used can be purchased at The Funkie Junkie Boutique

Well, we're back to cold and rainy, just like that! I refuse to be locked in doors, so I put on my rain jacket, pulled up the hoodie and headed out! For my first picture I would like to quote a line from Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie...it goes a little something like this:

'ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHER'...
I think I will sneak out and hang a decoration on this lonely tree this Christmas. Dare to be different I say!

If anyone can please tell me what type of tree that is?? Those droopy branches are really throwing me and I can't find it in any Ontario Tree listings, so I'm thinking it's not a native breed!

I've never seen a tree like this before. At first I thought it was covered with spider webs. Totally cool!

The rain doesn't stop my sweet sweet family from coming to visit. Mr Scruff is right at home under the overhang eating his breakfast. Dee Dee prefers to sit on the rail so she can keep her eye on the things. Doesn't stop the birds from coming either!

Thought I would wait a bit for my coffee shot on this day. There were some interesting clouds reflecting the morning light. So beautiful!

That's it for today. Thank you for stopping in and for all the amazing comments. I read and appreciate every single one! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Your photos are lovely, great to see something different. I looked the tree up and it could be an Alaskan Cedar "Chamaecyparis nootkatensis ‘Van den Aker’ — Weeping Alaskan Cedar." A beautiful tree.

I love Mr Scruff, that is such a great name for him! The water looks quite different now, with the mist hanging over it.... I think the tree might be one from the cedar family, not sure which one (my Mum had a cedar chest and the smell was divine so perhaps you could have a sniff of the bark.... just a thought...). 48. Pamellia, I somehow managed to survive the 70 's, and it looks as if you may have captured the spirit, but I can't say for sure, because I wore clothes from the 60's in the 70's (hand me downs) and we were not current with our home fashions either! Tee Hee! Either way you have done a fantastic job putting those bold colors to use here on your background (LOVE!) and those beautiful blooms!

Love your rainy scenes, and I have no ideas on the tree other than the obvious that it's a conifer. Perhaps if you googled conifers. We have a house in our neighborhood that has two huge similar looking trees out front. Perhaps I can knock on their door...

The furry kiddos are looking good! Love seeing a wet squirrel tail! First time seeing that, and it looks as if he could use a little fluffing up! Sending you sunshine and hugs!

  51. Wowzers on the colors and the elements in this funkaluscious design. That peacock is my fave and oh so awesome sauce! Are you going to do a video with the color bursts? That could be fun and informative. Love your videos! I keep meaning to show you a Christmas card I made after watching your video. Such an inspiration! I wore bell bottoms but my generation called em flare jeans but I'm an 80's child.

Happy to see the furry critters out and about. I have no clue when it comes to trees and such. Hugz to you muffin! ~Doc

    Just playing catch up.
Did think someone was a Huey Lewis fan when I saw the title lol! Super bold and bright colours that reflect the vivid colours of the time (so I hear as I'm far to young to remember lol!)
I did think your tree looked like a Himalayan Cedar but I suppose an Alaskan one seems more likely as you're a bit closer to Alaska than the Himalayas lol!
